When #MeToo Triggers Painful Memories

Posted on October 28, 2017 by Wendy Maltz - Media Interviews, Sexual Abuse Healing

While the #MeToo movement is awesome and bringing much-needed attention to the ubiquitous problem of sexual abuse in our culture, it is also triggering some painful memories for many survivors. If that is the case for you or someone you know Wendy Maltz, author of The Sexual Healing Journey has helped write an informative article for Bottomline Health that gives lots of suggestions for ways to deal with upsetting feelings and and heal from what happened in the past. The article, “When #MeToo Brings Up Painful Memories of Sexual Abuse, Here’s Help” covers questions survivors have such as: whether and how much to disclose about past sex abuse, who to share with, what to do if the past offender is still in your life, when to seek therapy, and more.

Wendy is also featured in a program discussing #MeToo and Sexual Abuse Healing on the “About Health” KPFA Radio show with Dr. Will Courtenay, November 6, 2017. To listen, CLICK HERE FOR KPFA RADIO SHOW LINK

Wendy’s Incest & Sexuality Book Now FREE

Posted on February 28, 2017 by Wendy Maltz - Sexual Abuse Healing

Wendy Maltz’s first book, the recovery classic, Incest & Sexuality: A Guide to Understanding & Healing is now available for FREE download through the International Psychotherapy Institute’s free psychotherapy books program. Coauthored with Beverly Holman, it was first published in 1987 by Lexington books, and later republished by Jossey-Bass.  It broke new ground being the first book to devote itself entirely to the sexual repercussions of sexual abuse.
Wendy remembers writing it by hand on a yellow legal pad and later literally “cutting and pasting” (with scissors and glue!!!) the typed versions of early drafts to make edits. Incest & Sexuality sold over 50,000 copies during its first few years alone, and educated both professional and public readers, for many years more until it went out of print. While understandably a bit dated now, given that it’s been 30 years, it remains a groundbreaking healing guide filled with stories, concepts, and heart-felt ideas that are still relevant to people today.

Trump Causing Sex Turn-Off – Huff Post Article

Posted on December 9, 2016 by Wendy Maltz - Media Interviews, Sexual Abuse Healing, Uncategorized

In a new article entitled, “Post Election, Survivors of Assault are Struggling to Have Sex Again,” Huffington Post reporter, Catherine Pearson, explores how Trump’s shocking election win has been re-traumatizing sexual abuse survivors and causing sex and intimacy problems.  She quotes Wendy Maltz about the phenomenon and mentions The Sexual Healing Journey as a resource.  Catherine discusses how Trump’s physical characteristics and his getting away with perpetrating sexual assaults can trigger a BIG TURN-OFF to sex. Survivors may experience Trump’s having been voted into the highest office in the land by others as a betrayal by society and a dismissal of the seriousness of sex abuse. As depressing as it may be, it can be helpful to keep in mind the fact that, regardless of who’s president: We all have the right and power to define and make sex what we want it to be in our own lives and loving relationships.

Fighting Rape Myths with Empathy – Rosenthal article

Posted on June 1, 2016 by Wendy Maltz - Sexual Abuse Healing

A new voice — a smart, heartfelt read. Marina Rosenthal, teacher and therapist at the University of Oregon, has written an illuminating article in the Huffington Post on her experiences teaching about rape myths and sexual assault in the classroom setting.

Cork, Ireland

It was my pleasure to advise and work with Marina on this article. I’m so impressed with her writing, compassion, and insights. What’s more, Marina now has her own blog on Huffington Post and we can look forward to more articles of hers in the future!
